Registration Due September 8, 2012 for Wood Bowl Turning Workshop

Dahmen Barn sponsors introduction to bowl turning workshop on September 15

On Saturday, September 15 from 9 am to 3:30 pm, wood artist Len Zeoli will hold a workshop for beginners, sponsored by Artisans at the Dahmen Barn.  The cost is $95 and includes the use of a power lathe and all the materials.  Registrations must be received by September 9.  Maximum number of students is 5.  Register online using the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or call 509-229-3414.

This is a one-day session in Len's Uniontown studio where the beginning student will learn the basics of bowl turning and turn a green wood bowl. Several topics will be presented that include general wood shop and lathe safety, bowl design, choice of wood for turning, proper fastening of wood onto the lathe, and finishing. Len will demonstrate bowl turning and give you hands-on instruction in the use of bowl turning tools. No experience is necessary, yet you will learn skills you can take to the next level. All tools and materials will be provided.

Len Zeoli has been working with wood since he first made his own toys as a child. Wood has always been for him a readily available material that possesses lots of personality and possibility. His professional career in woodworking began in 1978 when he set up his first shop, where he taught himself cabinet and furniture making. Not satisfied with just buying lumber, Len immersed himself in the idea of wood as material, falling and milling trees that would one day find their way into his finished work. This is nowhere more true than in his bowl turning, where he has focused on turning green wood. Many years of learning by doing have given him a sense of how to begin at the beginning and to persist through process to a finished piece. Len has a special place in his life for those who want to learn how to work with wood, and is desirous of sharing his hard earned knowledge to help his students move in satisfying and productive directions.

Free Country Swing Dance Lessons August 31. 2012

At Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, on Friday August 31, 2012, a country swing dance is scheduled with free dance lessons preceding the dance.  Drop in for the dance lessons at 6:15; the dance begins at 7:30.  Dance lessons are free; those attending the dance must pay the $7 cover charge.

Classic country music for the dance is provided by  Bodie Dominguez, a good Friend of the Barn. Lessons will be given free of charge by David and Gabby Skeate, who are popular instructors for Pullman Parks and Recreation.

This dance was suggested by Gail Miller, enthusiast for country swing dancing. Gail said, “I took my first country swing dance class back in 1980 and danced regularly with my partner from that class at the Capricorn Ballroom in Moscow. I pursued grad school at U Texas-Austin where I danced in some of the big Texas dance halls. Eventually, my original partner moved away, and when I returned to the Palouse, the Capricorn Ballroom had burned down.

"I’ve always missed country swing and wanted to get back into it, so when I saw David and Gabby Skeate’s class at Pullman Parks and Rec I signed up for a refresher course. I’m now looking for a new partner!”

Bodie’s music is diverse: his early influences were classic country and rock and roll. He has performed in clubs and honky tonks for nearly forty years with a group and as a single doing dance music and classic country.

During the last 15 years, Bodie has been involved with cowboy music and poetry as well. Bodie has performed in just about every club and honky tonk bar within a 200 mile radius of the Lewiston, Clarkston area at one time or another. Bodie started playing with bands in 1972. He has branched out into song writing, promoting, radio DJ, but his best interest is live performances for dances, in radio, cowboy gatherings, clubs, weddings, and private parties.

Diana Moses Botkin Oil Painting Workshop August 18, 2012

On Saturday, August 18 from 11 am to 5 pm award winning artist Diana Moses Botkin will lead a workshop in developing oil painting skills at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown.

il paints are a wonderful, forgiving and fun medium. Oils have advantages over acrylics because of their slower drying time for blending, and wiping off for changes.  This class will help those who have been wanting to paint with oils but didn’t know where to start or provide guidance to those with some experience but whose skills are rusty.

Diana will demonstrate color mixing, laying in shapes, and show you how to make an oil study from still life set-ups.  The cost is $72 with registrations required by August 6.  Register online using the link at the top of the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or call 509-229-3414.

All levels of expertise are welcome to participate in this relaxed class. Beginning students will have simpler exercises and more experienced students can build on current skills. Class enrollees will each have the opportunity to watch the teacher’s live painting demos, and receive individual help during painting sessions.

A supply list for students wishing to bring their own materials may be found on the website calendar listing at
www.artisanbarn.org.  Alternately, students may pay a materials fee of $15 and use class supplies during the workshop.

Diana Moses Botkin’s art career has encompassed opportunities in commercial art, custom murals, portrait painting, teaching, and writing about art. Her work has been reproduced on book covers, in calendars, and in books. Additionally, she is a contributing editor for Professional Artist Magazine (formerly Art Calendar).

Recently, the artist’s work has been accepted to Oil Painters of America 20th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils, and Richeson75 Small Works National Exhibit. She was commissioned to paint the art for the 2011 Festival at Sandpoint.

Diana’s art has been honored with regional and national awards, museum and corporate purchases, and numerous private commissions. Collectors include the City of Moscow Idaho, St. Peter Hospital in Olympia Washington, Bristol-Myers Pharmaceutical Corporation in Evansville Indiana, Oklahoma Allergy Clinic in Oklahoma City, Salem Hospital in Salem Oregon, Evansville Museum of Arts and Science in Evansville Indiana, Fred Jones Museum of Art in Norman Oklahoma, and others.

Additionally, Moses Botkin participates in invitational regional plein air events. She is also active in the Daily Painting art movement, and shares her work regularly online at her website, blog, and at DailyPainters.com where she sells her art to collectors worldwide. A wife, mother and grandmother, she currently lives and works in north Idaho.

Palouse Country Cowboy Poetry Association at Uniontown August 18, 2012

On Saturday, August 18 at 7:00 pm, the Palouse Country Cowboy Poetry Association will present “Forget the Dog Days of Summer” at the Dahmen Barn, 419 N. Park Way, Uniontown, Wash. The cowboy poetry and western music performance will be held on the hillside behind the Barn, and will move inside if the weather dictates. The cost is $7 at the door.

PCCPA invites you to meet Rube & Rufus:

Rube and Rufus was cowboys, well, actual, not was but is, an’ they know cowboyin’ real good but ain’t to well informed ‘bout other stuff. Especially Rube. He can ride, rope, brand and lope with the best but mostly asks Rufus ‘bout other stuff. Now Rufus ain’t exactly no mental giant neither but he don’t let that slow him down none. If he don’t know an answer, he’ll likely make up somethin’ or maybe bold face lie about it. He just plumb hates to say, “I don’t know”.

Well, one recent day, Rube come to Rufus and asked, “What does ‘Dog Days of Summer’ mean”? Rufus asked Rube where he had heard that, and Rube said he’d seen a poster with them words on it. Said the poster said, “Forget the Dog Days of Summer while you listen to Cowboy Poetry and Western Music at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, Washington on August 18th at 7:00pm.

Rufus hemmed and hawed tryin’ to come up with some answer ‘bout “Dog Days of Summer”. Said maybe it had somethin’ to do with bulldoggin’ at all them summer rodeos. Rube said he didn’t think so. Said he was pretty “sirius” (Rube can’t spell neither) ‘bout findin’ out and figgered on goin’ to that Cowboy Poetry thing since it only cost $7.00 apiece, and askin’ ‘bout it there. Rufus allowed he’d go too but didn’t figger he’d learn much he didn’t already know.

In 1991 Baxter Black, probably today’s best known cowboy poet, told a group of Palouse country enthusiasts gathered in Asotin, Washington, that cowboy poetry was the fastest growing western cultural activity and that they should get involved. The group members ruminated on that statement, some attended gatherings (poetry and music performing sessions) and some began writing cowboy poetry.

Finally, in 1995, following a cowboy poetry workshop led by local cowboy poet, Gene Semingson, the group decided to develop a more formal organization and the Palouse Country Cowboy Poetry Association was formed.

In 1996 the Association took another step and sponsored its own gathering which was quite successful. More than sixty cowboy poets and musicians from all over the country came to the Palouse to read, recite, play and sing. Some came just to listen. The association sponsored twelve more such gatherings in succeeding years, culminating in 2008 with its 13th and final gathering. So, while the club no longer sponsors an annual gathering, individual members perform at many gatherings around the northwest each year.

The Association started in 1995 with seven members. Today there are about 40 members, both cowboy poets and musicians, coming from all over the Palouse. Meetings are held every two months, sometimes in restaurants and other times in member’s homes with wonderful potlucks. Wherever the meeting is held, there is always plenty of food, fellowship and fun: Fun in the performance of and listening to poetry and music by those members who choose to participate.

CREATIVE AIRPLANE with artist Bobbi Kelly:  Kids will first fold a paper airplane (that's the easy part), then using markers, ink, colored pencil and/or crayons, they will draw an original design ON all sides of the plane. Designs might be something realistic, such as sky and clouds, lightning bolts, hearts and flowers, birds or animals, people or superheroes. Or they might be abstract swirls and patterns, or geometric designs--whatever the young artists can imagine. The last step will be to take the airplanes outside and see how well they fly!

Bobbi retired as a high school art instructor and now offers workshops for both children and adults. She also concentrates on her own watercolor painting and is an active member of the Palouse Watercolor Socius and the Idaho Watercolor Society, participating in art exhibits and festivals throughout the Northwest.

JIM DINE HEARTS with art educator Tiffany Gerl:  During this session the kids will be introduced to the American Pop artist Jim Dine, who created the abstract blue heart sculpture on the WSU campus. They will then create an abstract pop art heart with oil pastels.

Tiffany is currently the elementary art teacher for the Pullman school district, and finds much joy in bringing art into each student’s life. She is originally from Spokane and grew up with parents that owned a stained glass shop.

Mcrowave Water Safely

Sometimes a FWD, those often annoying messages, contain information worth sharing. The following is one such FWD:

Microwaving Water!
A 26-year old man decided to have a
cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup 'blew up' into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build-up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.

He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a
microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc, (nothing metal).

General Electric's Response:

Thanks for contacting us; I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.

To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds before moving it or adding anything into it.

Here is what a local high school science teacher had to say on the matter: 'Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur any time water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, or when heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup).

What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new, then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat that has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.

What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beveragespews when opened after
having been shaken.

If you pass this on
, you could very well save someone from a lot of pain and suffering.

Bluegrass, Country, Folk Music Outdoors at Dahmen Barn, August 4, 2012

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the band Hotwire will play bluegrass, country and folk music outdoors at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. If weather dictates, the performance will be moved indoors.

The group includes champion musicians and has a resonant voice blend accompanied by guitars, mandolins and bass. Admission is $10 at the door; kids under 12 are free.

Dave Hunt is a two-time Utah State flat-picking champion on both guitar and mandolin. He has placed 2nd on fiddle. Dave’s uncanny ability to duplicate complex Doc Watson licks on guitar is a showstopper. His pleasant tenor voice occasionally takes the lead, and provides the foundation for Hotwire’s harmonies.

Hotwire's lead singer, Dale Fisk, toured the western U.S. with a country-rock band in the 1970s. He plays guitar and mandolin. He has placed 3rd In Idaho’s Old Time Fiddler’s flat-picking competition on mandolin. His clear voice has the versatility to range from a high lonesome sound reminiscent of Vince Gill all the way down to more resonant tones of singers like Johnny Cash.

Dennis Maggard plays banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass. He has taken first place in Idaho’s Old Time Fiddler’s state flat-picking competition on guitar. Dennis’s deep bass voice gives Hotwire’s occasional four-part harmonies its rich tone.

For the past eight years Helen Smith has played bluegrass bass in the states of Idaho, Washington and Montana. She provides that rhythmic glue that binds a bluegrass band together. She also plays guitar and provides the high harmonies that give Hotwire its clear, resonant vocal blend.

The Hotwire band keeps a busy performance schedule. It was a real challenge to fit them into the Barn's calendar.

Their 2011 gigs included:
Mount St. Helens Bluegrass Festival--Toledo, WA
Art on the Green--Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Bluegrass on the Greenbelt--Idaho Falls, Idaho
Council Mountain Music Festival--Council, Idaho (Headline act) Weiser Old Time Fiddle Contest and Festival—Weiser, Idaho Grangeville Arts Concert Series—Grangeville, Idaho Kooskia Opera House – Kooskia, Idaho (sold out, standing ovation) Bluegrass in the Barn, Nampa, Idaho (packed house)
