: Learn to paint a portrait of your pet – a workshop at the Dahmen Barn
At Artisans at the Dahmen Barn on Saturday, April 28, from 10 am to 4 pm, create a personal heirloom painting of your favorite pet in oils or acrylic paints. Students will explore the basics of painting from the beginning drawing to the finished painting. This class is focused on capturing the character of your pet in painting. Some prior painting experience is preferred, but beginners are welcome. This class is taught by award winning artist Dana Aldis to students age 16 and older. The cost is $83 with registrations required by April 23. Register online on the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or call 509-229-3414. The list of materials students must bring may be seen on the calendar listing.
The class will focus on how to mix and apply paint in a direct manner, and get the painting to a conclusion. Dana will talk about the tools, materials and the process of painting from start to finish. The goal during this workshop is to give students a good overview of painting, and for them to leave with a finished piece of art. Students will also have the knowledge and new skills needed to start work on additional paintings on their own.
Dana began her artistic journey when she was nine years old when her uncle gave her a box of Grumbacher Pastels and showed her how to blend and render an apple. Later on she continued her art education with a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington DC, followed by an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She studied drawing, painting and sculpture, along with some printmaking and book arts. Her parents encouraged her studies, often enrolling her in art classes in the countries they were stationed in during their time with the State Department.
In 2002 Dana began teaching drawing and painting at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV. Over the next ten years she has taught students of all ages. She found that teaching art made her a better artist, allowing her to express her ideas with better clarity. Drawing is the foundation of her art and she also enjoys working in a variety of art media – watercolor, egg tempera, charcoal, graphite, oils and acrylics. In 2008 she started painting pet portraits.
Dana and her husband moved to Moscow, Idaho in the summer of 2011. Soon after, Dana won first place in the Palouse Plein Air Contest hosted by the City of Moscow Third Street Gallery. Her painting, Palouse Impression, is now part of the City Art Collection. Dana’s artwork has been exhibited and sold nationwide. She currently teaches drawing and painting privately or in group classes. View her portraits on her blog: portraitsbydanaaldis.blogspot.com
