Diana Moses Botkin's Workshop Registration Due August 6, 2012

On Saturday, August 18, 2012, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., award winning artist Diana Moses Botkin will lead a workshop in developing oil painting skills at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown.

Oil paints are a wonderful, forgiving and fun medium. Oils have advantages over acrylics because of their slower drying time for blending, and wiping off for changes. This class will help those who have been wanting to paint with oils but didn’t know where to start or provide guidance to those with some experience but whose skills are rusty.

Diana will demonstrate color mixing, laying in shapes, and show you how to make an oil study from still life set-ups.  The cost is $72 with registrations required by August 6.  Register online using the link at the top of the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or call 509-229-3414.

All levels of expertise are welcome to participate in this relaxed class. Beginning students will have simpler exercises and more experienced students can build on current skills. Class enrollees will each have the opportunity to watch the teacher’s live painting demos, and receive individual help during painting sessions.

A supply list for students wishing to bring their own materials may be found on the website calendar listing at
www.artisanbarn.org.  Alternately, students may pay a materials fee of $15 and use class supplies during the workshop.

Diana Moses Botkin’s art career has encompassed opportunities in commercial art, custom murals, portrait painting, teaching, and writing about art. Her work has been reproduced on book covers, in calendars, and in books. Additionally, she is a contributing editor for Professional Artist Magazine (formerly Art Calendar).

Recently, the artist’s work has been accepted to Oil Painters of America 20th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils, and Richeson75 Small Works National Exhibit. She was commissioned to paint the art for the 2011 Festival at Sandpoint.

Diana’s art has been honored with regional and national awards, museum and corporate purchases, and numerous private commissions. Collectors include the City of Moscow Idaho, St. Peter Hospital in Olympia Washington, Bristol-Myers Pharmaceutical Corporation in Evansville Indiana, Oklahoma Allergy Clinic in Oklahoma City, Salem Hospital in Salem Oregon, Evansville Museum of Arts and Science in Evansville Indiana, Fred Jones Museum of Art in Norman Oklahoma, and others.

Additionally, Moses Botkin participates in invitational regional plein air events. She is also active in the Daily Painting art movement, and shares her work regularly online at her website, blog, and at DailyPainters.com where she sells her art to collectors worldwide. A wife, mother and grandmother, she currently lives and works in no
rth Idaho.

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is in Uniontown at 419 Highway 195, in the big white barn behind the famous iron wheel fence.  The non-profit creativity center is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.  There is no daily admission fee and the building is fully ADA compliant.

Mcrowave Water Safely

Sometimes a FWD, those often annoying messages, contain information worth sharing. The following is one such FWD:

Microwaving Water!
A 26-year old man decided to have a
cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup 'blew up' into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build-up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.

He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a
microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc, (nothing metal).

General Electric's Response:

Thanks for contacting us; I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.

To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds before moving it or adding anything into it.

Here is what a local high school science teacher had to say on the matter: 'Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur any time water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, or when heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup).

What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new, then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat that has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.

What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beveragespews when opened after
having been shaken.

If you pass this on
, you could very well save someone from a lot of pain and suffering.

Bluegrass, Country, Folk Music Outdoors at Dahmen Barn, August 4, 2012

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the band Hotwire will play bluegrass, country and folk music outdoors at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. If weather dictates, the performance will be moved indoors.

The group includes champion musicians and has a resonant voice blend accompanied by guitars, mandolins and bass. Admission is $10 at the door; kids under 12 are free.

Dave Hunt is a two-time Utah State flat-picking champion on both guitar and mandolin. He has placed 2nd on fiddle. Dave’s uncanny ability to duplicate complex Doc Watson licks on guitar is a showstopper. His pleasant tenor voice occasionally takes the lead, and provides the foundation for Hotwire’s harmonies.

Hotwire's lead singer, Dale Fisk, toured the western U.S. with a country-rock band in the 1970s. He plays guitar and mandolin. He has placed 3rd In Idaho’s Old Time Fiddler’s flat-picking competition on mandolin. His clear voice has the versatility to range from a high lonesome sound reminiscent of Vince Gill all the way down to more resonant tones of singers like Johnny Cash.

Dennis Maggard plays banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass. He has taken first place in Idaho’s Old Time Fiddler’s state flat-picking competition on guitar. Dennis’s deep bass voice gives Hotwire’s occasional four-part harmonies its rich tone.

For the past eight years Helen Smith has played bluegrass bass in the states of Idaho, Washington and Montana. She provides that rhythmic glue that binds a bluegrass band together. She also plays guitar and provides the high harmonies that give Hotwire its clear, resonant vocal blend.

The Hotwire band keeps a busy performance schedule. It was a real challenge to fit them into the Barn's calendar.

Their 2011 gigs included:
Mount St. Helens Bluegrass Festival--Toledo, WA
Art on the Green--Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Bluegrass on the Greenbelt--Idaho Falls, Idaho
Council Mountain Music Festival--Council, Idaho (Headline act) Weiser Old Time Fiddle Contest and Festival—Weiser, Idaho Grangeville Arts Concert Series—Grangeville, Idaho Kooskia Opera House – Kooskia, Idaho (sold out, standing ovation) Bluegrass in the Barn, Nampa, Idaho (packed house)

Super Saturated Sugar Strings Band - July 21, 2012 at Uniontown

Band from Anchorage Alaska to play at the Dahmen barn on July 21, 2012.

The SSSS are a unique combination in the fact that their sound is as widespread as their backgrounds. Composed of a native South Carolinian, Alaskan, Coloradan, and Pennsylvanian, they all came into music via different routes. All ear musicians at heart, the three girls pursued classical music, and Carlyle was influenced greatly by the Mississippi blues. Combine these diverse backgrounds with a desire to create beautiful music, and you get some unique and lovely sounds.

Together, their sound melds, like all of their backgrounds, and captures influences from folk, rock, blues, classical, nature, gardening, and all things intensely beautiful. While seemingly clichéd, the truth about what makes SSSS so great is that they genuinely enjoy playing with one another. It's so rare to find four people whose personalities and musical styles (while strikingly different) blend so well. The pure joy of playing bleeds off the stage and into the crowd and the energy feels as good as the music sounds.”

Registration Deadline for Childrens' Creativity Workshops is July 15, 2012

On Thursday afternoon, July 19, 2012, from 1:00 to 3:15 p.m. the second in a series of six creativity workshops for children aged 7 to 14 will be held at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown.

Register for this session by the end of the day Sunday, July 15 by using the link at the top of the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or by calling 509-229-3414.

The topics on July 19 are:

MYSTERY DESIGN CLASS taught by resident artist Alison Oman.

Who are artists, designers, craftsmen? What do they do? We'll talk about how ‘things’ need to be designed before they are made – and then let's see how observant you really are! In a box will be an object that I give clues to, guess what it is and then as you guess we'll discuss really briefly what each clue signifies… which will eventually add up to a design that means living in the USA! Students will then make a design that means living in this area – Palouse, LC Valley, etc…and become designers themselves!

Alison Oman came to Idaho in 1984 with a college background in photography and printmaking, and a love of creating stories in pictures. She joined the Palouse Hills Weavers Guild where she learned to create her ‘pictures’ in tapestry. In 1987 a chance course in tapestry that incorporated glass beads, gave her an exciting new challenge and beading on a loom became the focus of her work. For the past twenty years weaving with beads of all types and textures - glass, ceramic, and metal – has been Alison’s passion. When her children were young, Alison shared her talents with their classrooms in leading some fun creative experiences.

FLEXAGONS taught by artist Bobbi Kelly
A Flexagon is a 6-sided creative design. From a single strip of paper, students will create a Flexagon, which will appear to have only two sides, but when properly folded will reveal four more. When each side has been decorated with a different design, the result is a unique 6-sided figure that unfolds.

Bobbi retired as a high school art instructor and now offers workshops for both children and adults. She also concentrates on her own watercolor painting and is an active member of the Palouse Watercolor Socius and the Idaho Watercolor Society, participating in art exhibits and festivals throughout the Northwest.

The cost is $18, with a reduced rate of $16 if a child is registered with a friend or sibling.  This is the 5th year the creativity workshops have been offered at the Dahmen Barn where the children experience two topics per day with a healthy snack in between.  The topics are taught by resident artists at the Barn or regional artists experienced in working with children.

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is a non-profit creativity center where art comes alive.  The facility is in Uniontown in the big white barn behind the famous iron wheel fence.  It is fully ADA compliant and there is no daily admission fee.  Open days are Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.  Information:  www.artisanbarn.org or 509-229-3414.
