Freeman High School Booster Club -- Fans and Supporters

Freeman Fans and Supporters,

Welcome to another exciting year of Freeman Scottie Athletics! We, the Booster Club, are always thrilled with the excellent community support of athletics at Freeman High School. You can continue to show that support by becoming or continuing to be a member of the FHS Booster Club!

Booster Club is formed of parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, alumni and businesses from and serving the community whose purpose supports Freeman High School athletic programs: baseball, basketball, cheer squad, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and wrestling.

Revenues come from membership dues, concessions, Harvest Hoops, and other fundraising events. Typically at the end of the school year coaches from each sport may submit items needed that the school district is not eligible to support to the Booster Club Committee for consideration to purchase.

Some of the projects we have sponsored include: baseball tarps/bags, football coaches headsets, tennis rebounder, cheer mats, new gym scorer’s table, spinner/training bike, volleyball bags, golf bags, baseline concussion testing program, wrestling mats rolling carts, senior athletic scholarships and many more.

Members of the Booster Club are honored with their name on display on the FHS Booster Club banner in the high school gym. Meetings are at the High School on the 2nd Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. You are free to join us at the meetings.
Please call me to help with Concessions: sport(s) (509) 291-3721

Please help us continue to support our athletes! Didn’t get a chance to help with concessions during the fall? We can use your help during basketball & wrestling matches. Please call Shelly to volunteer. 720-6460.

Thorn Creek Express Band to Play at the Dahmen Barn, November 19, 2011

Four talented brothers from Genesee ranging in age from 13 to 17 are making a name for themselves as the Thorn Creek Express band.

They play Western, Country, Old Time, Bluegrass and Gospel, featuring songs from Hank Williams, Flatt & Scruggs, Bob Wills, Johnny Cash, Charlie Daniels, Alabama, and Dierks Bently along with Irish and old time fiddle tunes. They will be playing at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown on Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 pm. Admission is $7 at the door. Their music is fun for all ages.

The boys have been home schooled on the oldest homestead along Thorn Creek. The original cabin dating back to 1870 still stands along the creek and was the first mail drop for the pony express in the Thorn Creek Territory, hence the bands name Thorn Creek Express. The band gives credit to their beginnings to the Banana Belt Fiddlers of Lewiston who gave them much encouragement and a place to perform. However, their first "real" band performance was at the Dahmen Barn four years ago when they played for a few art openings.

For the past two years, wanting to do for others what the Old Time Fiddlers have done for them, the boys have started a group which they call the "Young Old Time Fiddlers" with the intent to encourage young musicians to come perform with them at Royal Plaza Retirement Center once a month.

For the past 4 years the band has been playing mostly in the Lewis-ClarkValley and on the Palouse. They regularly play at the Café Sage and Moscow Co-op along with being featured guests on the Western Heritage Show on KRLC. Most recently they performed for the Endicott fourth of July celebration, and will be appearing at the Nez Perce County Fair in Sept.

Lucas is 17 years old and has been playing the bass and guitar for 4 years; he also plays classical piano.

Austin is 15 years old and started taking fiddle lessons at the age of 7 and also plays mandolin, guitar, and piano.

Tyler, also 15 years old, first began playing piano at the age of 7, followed by guitar at the age of 9. Two years ago he added the mandolin.

Carson, age 12, soon to be 13…Has been playing the fiddle since the age of 8, but recently has fallen in love with the banjo which he has played for one year. He also takes piano lessons.

All the brothers have added vocals to their bio this past year and continue to work on developing their voices and harmonies.

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is on highway 195 in the big white barn behind the famous iron wheel fence. The non-profit creativity center is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. The building is fully handicap accessible and has no daily admission fee. Information: http://www.artisanbarn.org/ or 509-229-3414.

Registration due November 7 for Master Wood Artist Len Zeoli Workshop

Experienced wood turners may create gifts for Christmas during a one week open workshop. No minimum class size, maximum 5 students per day. The cut off for registrations is November 7, 2011.

Registrations may be made online using the form at the top of the calendar page at
http://www.artisanbarn.org/ or by calling 509-229-3414.

Master wood artist Len Zeoli will open his workshop in Uniontown the week of November 13 to 19 to those with experience who wish to make turned gifts for Christmas. The shop will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day at a cost of $20 per day.

This is ideal for the many past students of Len’s where they may take the skills they have learned and put them to use making gifts for friends and loved ones. Those who studied with Len have first dibs on space, but anyone with some turning experience is welcome.
Len Zeoli has been working with wood since he first made his own toys as a child.

Wood has always been for him a readily available material that possesses lots of personality and possibility.

Len will be available for assistance for the entire week to help participants make this Christmas a special time when they can be proud of their accomplishments.

All tools are provided. Wood for most projects will be available at a nominal charge or participants may bring their own supplies.

His professional career in woodworking began in 1978 when he set up his first shop where he taught himself cabinet and furniture making.

Not satisfied with just buying lumber, Len immersed himself in the idea of wood as material, falling and milling trees that would one day find their way into his finished work.

This is nowhere more true than in his bowl turning, where he has focused on turning green wood. Many years of learning by doing have given him a sense of how to begin at the beginning and to persist through process to a finished piece.

Len has a special place in his life for those who want to learn how to work with wood, and is desirous of sharing his hard earned knowledge to help his students move in satisfying and productive directions.

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is a non-profit creativity center in Uniontown located in the big white barn behind the famous iron wheel fence off highway 195. The three level building is fully handicap accessible and has no daily admission fee. It is open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Tim Grimm, Songwriter and Actor to Perform at Dahmen Barn October 30, 2011

Tim Grimm coming from Indiana to perform songs about rural life

On Sunday, October 30, Tim Grimm will be performing at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. Tim’s songs are full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life—rich with descriptive details, and sung with warmth and intimacy—recognizing the inextinguishable national romance with the idea of the family farm and the vanishing landscape of rural America. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and costs $10 at the door.

Tim Grimm is an award-winning songwriter and actor on stage and screen. In the late 1990s, Tim left Hollywood and a successful acting career (co-starring for two seasons in the NBC drama, Reasonable Doubts and in several films), to focus his life on his family and his art.

He grew up in the woods and small town settings of southern Indiana, son of schoolteachers and grandson of farmers, and his return home was a conscious choice to live a life of significance rather than one of “success’. He now lives with his wife and sons on an 80 acre farm close to where he grew up.

Tim has performed in theatres and coffeehouses around the United States, as well as significant Festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, Wildflower Festival, Fox Valley, the Pawtucket Arts Festival, the Indiana Festival at Conner Prairie and each September he hosts the Driftwood Valley Music Festival in Indiana.

He has filmed three major motion pictures this past year, including The Express, with Dennis Quaid, and Public Enemies, with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

Drawing and Painting Landscapes, Registration Due October 28, 2011 for Two-Day Workshop at the Dahmen Barn

On Saturday, November 5th and Sunday, November 6, Spokane artist Wes Hanson will conduct a workshop for adults with beginning or intermediate skill levels from 10 am to 4 pm at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown.

Titled “Drawing and Painting Landscapes in Watercolor”, the cost for the two days is $110.  Students bring their own materials which are listed on the calendar page at http://www.artisanbarn.org/.

Registrations must be received by October 28, and may be made online using the form at the top of the calendar page or by calling 509-229-3414.

Students will learn how to simplify landscape scenes and draw them in unified compositions, apply and manipulate watercolors in various ways, and paint landscapes that have strong designs, values, and vibrant colors.

Draw and paint along with the instructor as you learn how to control watercolor pigments. Be helped by him as you develop your own subjects.

Instructor Wes Hanson has painted watercolors for thirty-five years and teaches drawing and painting to adults for Spokane Art Supply and NorthIdahoCollege. His paintings are displayed at the DeniseOliverGallery in Harrison, Idaho and the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, Washington.

He is an active member in Watercolorists of the Inland Northwest and is a member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. He demonstrates painting products for Jack Richeson & Co., a major art supply company.

Calling All Writers

The Internet Writing Workshop is aggressively seeking members for the NFICTION list.

Gary Presley, IWW Ass't Administrator said,

"There was an IWW mention in WRITER'S DIGEST, and we admins are seeing new member applications increase as a result. But there's always a turnover, and it's important to keep "the word" circulating about the IWW. I am among the admins of the nonfiction (NFICTION) list, and I *know* that list isn't overpopulated.

Presley lives in Missouri and can be contacted via the Internet Writing Workshop.

"We ask that you "tweet," "blog," "Facebook," or <fill in the name of your favorite social media here> the word about our great volunteer group. Be sure to mention the IWW website <http://internetwritingworkshop.org/> because that's the gateway to the application process.

"As we say down in the hill country, '"Thanks 'til you're better paid."'
In addition to Nonfiction, IWW critiquing lists include:
Fiction, Lovestory, Nonfiction, Novels, Poetry, Practice, Prose/Flash-fiction, Script-writing, Child/Young adult .

The IWW also includes discussion lists: Writing, Creative Nonfiction, MarketChat, and SFChatAlso, The IWW Blog Writing Advice .
