Registation Due May 6, 2012 for Bowl Turning Workshop

On Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., wood artist Len Zeoli will host a one day workshop in his Uniontown studio for beginners of bowl turning on a power lathe. The cost is $95.

Registrations must be received by May 6. Register online on the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or call 509-229-3414.

This is a one-day session where the beginning student will learn the basics of bowl turning and turn a green wood bowl. Several topics will be presented that include general wood shop and lathe safety, bowl design, choice of wood for turning, proper fastening of wood onto the lathe, and finishing.

Len will demonstrate bowl turning and give you hands-on instruction in the use of bowl turning tools. No experience is necessary, yet you will learn skills you can take to the next level. All tools and materials will be provided.

Len Zeoli has been working with wood since he first made his own toys as a child. Wood has always been for him a readily available material that possesses lots of personality and possibility.

His professional career in woodworking began in 1978 when he set up his first shop, where he taught himself cabinet and furniture making. Not satisfied with just buying lumber, Len immersed himself in the idea of wood as material, falling and milling trees that would one day find their way into his finished work.

This is nowhere more true than in his bowl turning, where he has focused on turning green wood. Many years of learning by doing have given him a sense of how to begin at the beginning and to persist through process to a finished piece.

Len has a special place in his life for those who want to learn how to work with wood, and is desirous of sharing his hard earned knowledge to help his students move in satisfying and productive directions.

Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is a non-profit creativity center in Uniontown in the big white Barn behind the famous iron wheel fence. It is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm and has no daily admission fee. Information: www.artisanbarn.org or 509-229-3414.

Phillips says, "Envision its contributors sitting on a porch of your own design, each offering a manuscript or photo intended to intrigue, beguile, fascinate. Sit beside them, attend to their words and pictures, and discover shards of wisdom.

"Whatever its form, a front porch is where we, young and old, congregate; where we assemble, gather, mingle, congeal, where we get together. And once there we speculate, pontificate, prevaricate, and expostulate; occasionally we speak words of universal truth."

Among the authors featured on Front Porch Review are residents, or former residents, of the Palouse region of Washington State.

The April, 2012, issue is now available to enjoy.

If you don't discover an author you recognize, or find a story about the Palouse you relate to, explore past issues, and discover interesting facts about life on the Palouse.

Embellish and decorate a paper mache' box with an eggshell mosaic and paint or tissue paper collage. Parents are welcome to accompany children and each make a box. The cost of $14 per person includes all the materials. Katherine Clancy is a resident artist at the Dahmen Barn, and while her primary medium is watercolor she has been crafting and exploring other media for many years. Registration Due April 23, 2012 for Pet Painting Workshop

:     Learn to paint a portrait of your pet – a workshop at the Dahmen Barn

At Artisans at the Dahmen Barn on Saturday, April 28, from 10 am to 4 pm, create a personal heirloom painting of your favorite pet in oils or acrylic paints. Students will explore the basics of painting from the beginning drawing to the finished painting. This class is focused on capturing the character of your pet in painting. Some prior painting experience is preferred, but beginners are welcome. This class is taught by award winning artist Dana Aldis to students age 16 and older.  The cost is $83 with registrations required by April 23.  Register online on the calendar page at www.artisanbarn.org or call 509-229-3414.  The list of materials students must bring may be seen on the calendar listing.
The class will focus on how to mix and apply paint in a direct manner, and get the painting to a conclusion. Dana will talk about the tools, materials and the process of painting from start to finish. The goal during this workshop is to give students a good overview of painting, and for them to leave with a finished piece of art. Students will also have the knowledge and new skills needed to start work on additional paintings on their own.

Dana began her artistic journey when she was nine years old when her uncle gave her a box of Grumbacher Pastels and showed her how to blend and render an apple. Later on she continued her art education with a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington DC, followed by an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She studied drawing, painting and sculpture, along with some printmaking and book arts. Her parents encouraged her studies, often enrolling her in art classes in the countries they were stationed in during their time with the State Department.

In 2002 Dana began teaching drawing and painting at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV. Over the next ten years she has taught students of all ages. She found that teaching art made her a better artist, allowing her to express her ideas with better clarity. Drawing is the foundation of her art and she also enjoys working in a variety of art media – watercolor, egg tempera, charcoal, graphite, oils and acrylics. In 2008 she started painting pet portraits.

Dana and her husband moved to Moscow, Idaho in the summer of 2011. Soon after, Dana won first place in the Palouse Plein Air Contest hosted by the City of Moscow Third Street Gallery. Her painting, Palouse Impression, is now part of the City Art Collection. Dana’s artwork has been exhibited and sold nationwide. She currently teaches drawing and painting privately or in group classes.  View her portraits on her blog: portraitsbydanaaldis.blogspot.com
